Where to Take Fall Foliage Photos in Ohiopyle State Park

Fall is a magical time in Ohiopyle State Park, when the landscape transforms into a diverse palette of reds, oranges, and yellows. If you're looking to capture the breathtaking fall foliage, Ohiopyle offers countless spots to take incredible photos. The staff at nearby Benner’s Meadow Run RV Campground wanted to share our guide to the best places in Ohiopyle State Park for fall photography, along with tips for making the most of your visit.

1. Ohiopyle Falls

The park’s centerpiece is Ohiopyle Falls, a magnificent 20-foot waterfall that becomes even more stunning when surrounded by fall foliage. Throughout the fall, the colors of the trees framing the waterfall create a visually appealing contrast with the river. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to photograph the falls when the light is softer.

Photo tip:  For a more dramatic shot, try using a slower shutter speed to capture the movement of the water against the backdrop of autumn leaves.

2. Cucumber Falls

Cucumber Falls is another must-visit spot for fall photography. This 30-foot waterfall is surrounded by lush foliage, which turns into a vibrant mix of warm hues in the fall. The view from the top of the falls offers a sweeping perspective, while the base allows more detailed shots. The falls are easily accessible via a short trail, making it a favorite location for photographers of all skill levels.

Photo Tip: For a unique perspective, consider visiting early in the morning when the mist around the waterfall can add a mystical quality to your photos. A wide-angle lens can help capture both the waterfall and the foliage in one frame.

3. Baughman Rock Overlook

For panoramic views of the park's fall foliage, Baughman Rock Overlook is unparalleled. This vantage point provides a sweeping view of the Youghiogheny River Gorge, where the forested hills turn autumn colors. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to visit, as the low-angle light enhances the colors of the leaves and casts a warm glow over the landscape.

Photo Tip: Bring a telephoto lens to capture the intricate patterns of the forest canopy. This lens allows you to zoom in on the different shades of the leaves and the river below.

4. Ferncliff Peninsula

The Ferncliff Peninsula is a section within the park that’s surrounded on three sides by the Youghiogheny River. It's known for its diverse plant life, which includes a variety of hardwoods that display a brilliant array of fall colors. The Ferncliff Trail offers several viewpoints along the river, making it a location for both wide-angle landscape shots and more focused images of the colorful foliage.

Photo Tip: Use a polarizing filter to reduce reflections on the water and to enhance the colors of the leaves. This filter is especially useful on sunny days to deepen the blue of the sky and the intensity of the fall hues.

5. Great Allegheny Passage

The Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) is a multi-use trail that runs through Ohiopyle State Park and it offers numerous opportunities for fall photography. The section of the trail near Ohiopyle features tree-lined paths that turn into tunnels of color in the fall. Walking or biking along this trail allows you to explore various spots at your own pace, each offering different compositions for your photos.

Photo Tip: Frame your shots with the trail leading into the distance to create a sense of depth and perspective.  These photos will come to life when the path is bordered by vibrant fall foliage.

6. Meadow Run

Meadow Run is a picturesque area with a series of small waterfalls and natural waterslides. In the fall, the surrounding forest becomes a vibrant tapestry of color, and provides an appealing backdrop for the cascading water. The combination of the rocky terrain, water, and autumn leaves offers many possibilities for creative compositions.

Photo Tip: Experiment with different angles and perspectives to capture the contrast between the flowing water and the rugged rocks covered in fallen leaves.

7. Jonathan Run Trail

Jonathan Run Trail is a less-traveled path that leads to two beautiful waterfalls—Upper and Lower Jonathan Run Falls. This trail is especially scenic in the fall when the leaves create a canopy overhead. The waterfalls themselves are surrounded by a mix of deciduous trees, making this trail a serene spot for fall photography.

Photo Tip: The trail can be a bit slippery with leaves so wear sturdy footwear. Definitely use the natural elements like tree branches and rocks to frame your shots and add depth to your waterfall images.

8. Tharp Knob Overlook

Tharp Knob Overlook offers another expansive view of the Youghiogheny River and the surrounding forests. From this high vantage point, you can capture the expanse of the park's fall colors. The overlook is easily accessible, making it a great option for photographers looking for a quick yet rewarding photo opportunity.

Photo Tip: Arrive early for sunrise or stay for sunset to capture the changing light over the landscape.

9. Kentuck Knob

While Kentuck Knob is more famous for its Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house, the surrounding grounds also offer excellent fall photo opportunities. The property's hillside location provides views of the rolling hills and valleys, which are especially beautiful in autumn.

Photo Tip: After touring the house, take a quick walk around the grounds. The combination of architecture and natural beauty creates unique compositions, especially when framed by the fall foliage.

10. Ohiopyle's Bridges

Ohiopyle has several bridges that provide interesting vantage points for fall photography. The High Bridge on the GAP trail and the Low Bridge near the Ohiopyle Falls area are popular spots. From these bridges, you can photograph the river winding through the forest, often with reflections of the foliage on the water's surface.

Photo Tip: On a calm and clear day, experiment with reflections in your compositions.

Tips for Capturing Fall Colors in Ohiopyle State Park

  • Timing: The peak fall foliage in Ohiopyle typically occurs in mid-to-late October. However, this can vary depending on the weather. Keep an eye on local foliage reports to time your visit.
  • Lighting: Overcast days can be ideal for fall photography, as the diffuse light reduces shadows and enhances the colors of the leaves. On sunny days, aim to shoot during the golden hours—just after sunrise and just before sunset.
  • Equipment: Bring a tripod for stability, especially if you're shooting in low light or aiming for long exposures of waterfalls. A polarizing filter can help manage reflections and boost color saturation.
  • Composition: Look for natural frames like branches or rocks to add interest to your photos. Including elements like water, pathways, or structures can provide a focal point and guide the viewer's eye through the image.
